Weeklong summer programs for children pre-kindergarten through 8th grade are offered during June and July. Children participate in age-appropriate curriculum and investigations both inside the Living Science Center and outside in the vast River Legacy Parks. All classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

2010 Summer Classes will be offered June 21 - July 2 and July 12 - 30

PRESCHOOL

Children must be 3, 4 or 5/entering Kindergarten by the session date in which they are enrolled and must be fully toilet trained. Preschoolers attend a summer session for five consecutive days in the morning or the afternoon. Morning classes meet from 9 am - 12 pm and afternoon classes meet from 1 pm - 4 pm. Preschool classes are $175 per session.

Winged Things
• Age 3 (limit 9 per class) • June 21- 25 & June 28 - July 2
Learn about an intriguing variety of animals found in River Legacy Parks and their amazing adaptations for flight.

Scales & Tails
• Age 3 (limit 9 per class) • July 12 - 16 & July 19 - 23
Explore a scaly assortment of the Living Science Center’s cold-blooded creatures that have what it takes to be a reptile.

Litter Critters
• Age 4 (limit 12 per class) • June 21 - 25 & June 28 - July 2
Discover the fascinating animal and plant decomposers hidden within the leaf litter on the forest floor in River Legacy Parks.

Hide & Seek
• Age 4 (limit 12 per class) • July 12 - 16 & July 19 - 23
Examine the remarkable escape and defense mechanisms of numerous River Legacy Parks' animals as they assume the role of predator or prey.

Wet & Wild
• Age 5/Entering Kindergarten (limit 12 per class) • June 21 - 25 & June 28 - July 2
Join in a hands-on exploration of the astounding aquatic adaptations exhibited by the plants and animals dwelling within the watery environments of River Legacy Parks.

Mighty Morphs
• Age 5/Entering Kindergarten (limit 12 per class) • July 12 - 16 & July 19 - 23
Explore the astonishing transformations of special River Legacy Parks' animals as they undergo the wondrous process of metamorphosis.

1ST - 8TH GRADE CLASSES

First through sixth grade students attend a summer session for five consecutive days either in the morning or afternoon. Morning classes meet from 9 am - 12 pm and afternoon classes meet from 1 pm - 4 pm. The Nocturnal Wonders class will meet 6 pm - 9 pm Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday; Thursday students will meet at 6 pm for an overnight class that concludes at 8 am Friday morning. Seventh through eighth grade students will attend a 3-day session from 9 am to 2 pm. All participants should come dressed for both indoor and outdoor explorations.

1st - 4th Grade classes are $175 per session.
5th - 8th Grade classes are $200 per session.

Slime Sleuths
• Entering grades 1 & 2 (limit 14 per class) • June 21- 25, June 28 - July 2 & July 26 -30
Unravel the mysteries of slime while examining the tell-tale clues left by an assortment of River Legacy Parks' slime-covered inhabitants. Young sleuths will have the opportunity to hone their math and science process skills, dabble in chemistry, and engage in a variety of art and literature experiences while investigating the fascinating functions of slime.

Eggstraordinary Eggs
• Entering grades 1 & 2 (limit 14 per class) • July 12-16, July 19-23 & July 26 - 30
Eggs are everywhere – hidden under the ground, floating atop the water, nestled among the branches of trees, concealed inside our homes. Through careful observations and daily hands-on investigations of eggs and egg-laying animals students will learn how extremely exciting exploring eggs can be!

Hands-On Herpetology
• Entering grades 3 & 4 (limit 14 per class) • June 21 – 25 & June 28 – July 2
Engage in an up-close investigation of turtles, snakes, lizards, frogs, toads and more. Explore their natural history and the special adaptations that enable them to survive in Texas. Students will have the opportunity to safely handle reptiles and amphibians in the classroom and will search for and identify native herps in the park.

Water Works
• Entering grades 3 & 4 (limit 14 per class) • July 12 – 16 & July 19 – 23
Explore River Legacy Parks' pond and creek to uncover all that these fascinating systems have to offer. From insects that walk on water to disappearing ice cubes, students will investigate the many properties of water and its amazing transformations as they discover just how water works.

Nature's Nocturnal Wonders II – It's a Hoot!(Evening Class)
• Entering grades 5 & 6 (limit 14 per class) • June 21 – 25 & June 28 – July 2
Look deeply into the mysteries of the dark and discover the nocturnal animals that make River Legacy Parks their home during this evening class that includes a Thursday night sleepover. Students who enrolled in Nocturnal Wonders last summer are encouraged to attend again; there's much more to explore!

Simply Sunsational
• Entering grades 5 & 6 (limit 14 per class) • July 12 – 16 & July 19 – 23
Discover how the sun affects everyday life and the natural resources within River Legacy Parks. Throughout the week, participants will harness the sun's limitless energy to design, build and test solar water heaters, solar ovens and solar-powered model cars.

Amusement Park Science NEW! (3- day class)
• Entering grades 7 & 8 (limit 14 per class) • July 27 – 29 • 9 am to 2 pm
Class fee includes ticket to Six Flags Over Texas and behind-the-scenes tour
Explore the exciting world of amusement park rides and games. Using hands-on activities, students will familiarize themselves with science and engineering concepts like velocity, gravity, centripetal force, potential & kinetic energy and many others. Students will even build their own mini-roller coaster! The class will conclude with a visit to Six Flags Over Texas for a day of observations, calculations and riding!
