City Closes Non-Paved Trails at River
Legacy Parks
Officials Say, Off-Trail
Bicycling is Causing Devastation to the
Natural Environment
Arlington June 29, 2001
The City of Arlington announced today plans to close all
non-paved trails at River Legacy Parks for approximately one
year. According to Parks Director Pete Jamieson, off-trail
bicycling has damaged the natural environment and terrain
of the park.
Our objective is to prevent further damage to the natural
environment of River Legacy Parks and provide time for restoration,
Jamieson said.
A news conference will occur at 10 a.m. Monday, July 2, at
the entrance to River Legacy Parks, which is located at 701
NW Green Oaks Blvd. During the news conference, the City will
formally issue the temporary order that closes non-paved trails
for one year. Jamieson will be joined by Mayor Elzie Odom
and District 1 Councilmember Joe Bruner. The media is invited
to tour damaged areas and assist the City in communicating
the temporary closure to the public.
For about two years, the Arlington Parks and Recreation Department
has been working on a plan to end the destruction of park
property at River Legacy Parks and Meadowbrook Park. After
a series of public meetings, a dirt jumping area for BMX riders
was developed in June 2000 at the J.W. Dunlop Park. Despite
this effort, damage in many parts of River Legacy Parks continues.
Non-paved trails at Meadowbrook Park have been permanently
closed to the public.
Public awareness campaigns are under way. Signs are being
posted at River Legacy Parks entrances and along bike travel
routes. Posters are being placed in area retail outlets where
BMX and dirt jumping equipment and supplies are purchased.
During the weekends of July, informational material will be
distributed at River Legacy Parks.
Violation of this ordinance may result in a criminal trespass
charge, which is a Class B misdemeanor. Fines range up to
$2,000 and/or up to 180 days in jail.
