Four organizations and three individuals were honored Feb. 27 for their service and community contributions during the Star-Telegram's annual STARS (Star-Telegram Awards Recognizing Service) luncheon at the Wyndham Arlington hotel.

Longtime environmentalist Anita Garmon was named Woman of the Year. Allan Saxe, a philanthropist and associate political science professor at the University of Texas at Arlington, was named Man of the Year.

The Arlington Memorial Hospital Auxiliary was named the George Hawkes Large Organization of the Year, while the River Legacy Foundation received the Margaret Galloway Small Organization of the Year award. The 400-member Martin High School Student Council was named the Youth Organization of the Year.

Special community service awards were also given to Nick Stoneman, headmaster at Country Day School of Arlington, and Pat Remington, who is retiring from the City Council this year after serving 18 years in various community and civic service positions.

Each winner received $500, which will be donated to the charity of the recipient's choice.
