Summer Classes

Summer adventures at River Legacy Living Science Center provide students with an exciting hands-on, minds-on opportunity to explore the natural world.

  • A variety of weeklong programs in June and July offer children engaging ways to learn about wildlife, ecology and the environment.
  • Age-appropriate curriculums benefit preschool children through 8th grade.
  • All classes feature investigations both inside the Living Science Center and outdoors in the rich resources of River Legacy Parks.
  • Classes fill on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Children should come dressed for both indoor and outdoor explorations. Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended.

3-year-olds

What would you do if YOU had wings? Learn about some of River Legacy's wonderful winged creatures and the surprising things they can do with THEIR wings.

Scales & Tails – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  July 6-10 or July 13-17  •  $185 (Weeks 3 & 4 AM FULL - Waiting List Available)
Explore a scaly assortment of the Living Science Center's cold-blooded creatures who have what it takes to be a reptile.

 

4-year-olds

Examine the remarkable escape and defense mechanisms of numerous River Legacy Parks animals as they assume the role of predator or prey.

Animal Sense-Abilities  – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  July 6-10 or July 13-17  •  $185 (Week 3 AM FULL - Waiting List Available)
How does an earthworm hear? Why do snails wave their eyes around on stalks? You know how we use our senses - now learn how animals' senses help them to survive in River Legacy Parks.

5-year-olds/Entering kindergarten

Join in a hands-on exploration of the astounding aquatic adaptations exhibited by the plants and animals dwelling within the watery environments of River Legacy Parks.

Explore the astonishing transformations of special River Legacy Parks’ animals as they undergo the wondrous process of metamorphosis.

Peek inside River Legacy Parks' "art box" and discover the magnificent materials provided by nature and used by artists to create everything from paints and dyes to paper and clay.

Spectacular Spiders (Scouting Badge Connection)
Weave puzzling spider questions into answer-catching investigations while spying on the spectacular spiders of River Legacy Parks. Young spiderologists will create a spider sanctuary.

Texas Predators (Scouting Badge Connection)
Prowl the woods in search of evidence that predators live in River Legacy Parks. Learn about the physical adaptations and behaviors that make black widow spiders, bobcats, copperhead snakes and hawks such skillful hunters.

Hands-on Entomology (Scouting Badge Connection)
Are all "bugs" insects? Are all insects "bugs?" Explore woodland, grassland and aquatic habitats to discover the amazing variety of insects that make their home in River Legacy Parks. From true bugs to butterflies, learn to safely identify, capture, preserve and mount specimens to create your own insect collection.

Entering 5th & 6th Grades

Nature's Nocturnal Wonders! -- Includes a Thursday Night Sleepover(Scouting Badge Connection)
Look deeply into the mysteries of the dark to catch a glimpse of the rarely seen nocturnal inhabitants of River Legacy Parks. This evening class includes a Thursday night sleepover featuring a night hike and an upclose look at rescued bats from Bat Conservation International. From owls and opossums to glow-in-the-dark fungus, this class offers a fascinating look at nature's nocturnal wonders. Class concludes at 8 am Friday morning.

Focus on Nature! (Scouting Badge Connection)
Focus more closely on the wonders of nature through the lens of a digital camera. Capture the beauty of the natural world while learning the basics of composition and developing your artistic vision. Share your results in a photographic exhibition a at the Living Science Center. Cameras, printers and supplies will be provided.

Careers in Conservation – NEW! 
Is the natural world your passion? Do you want to know more about how YOU can make a difference in its preservation? Join like-minded youth to focus on wildlife biology, delve into issues like invasive species and habitat preservation, and explore natural resource conservation and restoration. Learn about career paths that will allow you to make your passion work for you.
