Summer Classes

Summer adventures at River Legacy Living Science Center provide students with an exciting hands-on, minds-on opportunity to explore the natural world.

  • A variety of weeklong programs in June and July offer children engaging ways to learn about wildlife, ecology and the environment.
  • Age-appropriate curriculums benefit preschool children through 8th grade.
  • All classes feature investigations both inside the Living Science Center and outdoors in the rich resources of River Legacy Parks.
  • Classes fill on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Children should come dressed for both indoor and outdoor explorations. Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended.

Classes and Class Schedules - 2014 

Preschool (Children must be 3, 4, or 5/entering kindergarten by the session date in which they are enrolled. Also, they must be fully toilet trained.)

3-year-olds

Scales & Tails – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  June 16-20 or June 23-27  •  $180 (Weeks 1 & 2 AM are Full)
Explore a scaly assortment of the Living Science Center's cold-blooded creatures who have what it takes to be a reptile.

Winged Wonders – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  July 7-11 or July 14-18 •  $180   (Weeks 3 & 4 AM are Full)

What would you do if YOU had wings? Learn about some of River Legacy's wonderful winged creatures and the surprising things they can do with THEIR wings.

 

4-year-olds

Animal Sense-Abilities  – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  June 16-20 or June 23-June 27  •  $180 (Week 1 AM is Full)
How does an earthworm hear? Why do snails wave their eyes around on stalks? You know how we use our senses - now learn how animals' senses help them to survive in River Legacy Parks.
Hide & Seek – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  July 7-11 or July 14-18 •  $180 (Week 3 AM is Full)
Examine the remarkable escape and defense mechanisms of numerous River Legacy Parks animals as they assume the role of predator or prey.

5-year-olds/Entering kindergarten

Explore the astonishing transformations of special River Legacy Parks’ animals as they undergo the wondrous process of metamorphosis.

Wet & Wild – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  July 7-11 or July 14-18 •  $180 (Weeks 3 & 4 AM are Full)
Join in a hands-on exploration of the astounding aquatic adaptations exhibited by the plants and animals dwelling within the watery environments of River Legacy Parks.

Eggstraordinary Eggs (Scouting Badge Connection: Tiger Cubs Elective 31)
Through careful observations and daily, hands-on investigations of eggs and egg-laying animals, students will learn how extremely eggs-citing exploring eggs can be!

Slime Sleuths (Scouting Badge Connection: Brownie Home Scientist Step 5; Tiger Cubs Elective 31)
Unravel the mysteries of slime while examining the tell-tale clues left by an assortment of River Legacy Parks' slime-covered inhabitants.

PSI: Pond Scene Investigations (Scouting Badge Connection: Animal Habitats Steps 1 & 2; Bear Cubs Achievement 5d; Bear Cubs Elective 12d:5; Webelos Naturalist #8, #11)
Investigate and experience close-up encounters with River Legacy Parks' aquatic residents - from insects that walk on water to reptiles that breathe less than once an hour.

Hands-on Herpetology (Scouting Badge Connection: Animal Habitats Steps 1 & 2; Bear Cubs Achievement 5a & 5d; Webelos Naturalist $7, #8)
Engage in an up-close investigation of turtles, snakes, lizards, frogs, toads and more. Explore their natural history and the special adaptations that enable them to survive in Texas.

Animal Care 101 (NEW!) (Scouting Badge Connection: Animal Habitats Steps 1, 2 & 3; Webelos Naturalist #7, #8)

Come explore the different habitats of our North Texas animals. Work with a Naturalist to learn about the animals in our collection, assist with their daily care routines, and create new exhibit environments for them. Get an up-close hands-on experience learning the ins and outs of the animals that call River Legacy Living Science Center home.

Nature’s Nocturnal Wonders II – It's a HOOT! -- Includes a Thursday Night Sleepover! (Scouting Badge Connection: Animal Habitats Steps 1 & 2; Camper Step 5; Night Owl Steps 1, 2 & 4; Webelos Naturalist #7, #8)

Look deeply into the mysteries of the dark to catch a glimpse of the rarely seen nocturnal inhabitants of River Legacy Parks. This evening class includes a Thursday night sleepover featuring a night hike and an observation of live owls and the fascinating adaptations that make them one of nature's nocturnal wonders. Students who enrolled in Nocturnal Wonders last summer are encouraged to attend again. Class concludes at 8 am Friday morning.

Entering 7th & 8th Grades

Amusement Park ScienceIncludes ticket to Six Flags! 
Through hands-on activities, students will familiarize themselves with science and engineering concepts in the exciting world of amusement park rides & games! Students will even build a mini-roller coaster. The class will conclude with a visit to Six Flags Over Texas for a day of observations, calculations and riding!

July 21-24 (M-Thurs)  •  9 am to 3 pm  •  $250
