Fort Worth Artist Gives Audubon Art Talk

Written by Kristi Friday, 07 January 2011 22:10

Fort Worth artist Billy Hassell will give an Art Talk at 2 pm, January 15 and again on February 5, regarding the Audubon Art Exhibit that is currently on display at River Legacy Living Science Center.

Hassell will discuss the relationship between John James Audubon's original watercolors and the reproduction paintings of Scott and Stuart Gentling. Audubon (1785-1852), an esteemed ornithological painter, was the inspiration for Gentling's Of Birds and Texas book, published in 1986.

The Mixed Media reproduction paintings of Scott and Stuart Gentling will be on exhibit at River Legacy Living Science Center through March 5. This is the first time these paintings have been on public exhibit outside of the Gentling's studio. The exhibit is available during the Center's regular operating hours, 9 am to 5 pm, Tuesday through Saturday, but may be closed weekdays during school programming.

Native Texan Billy Hassell has been making nature inspired paintings for more than 25 years. His colorful and expressive artworks, frequently featuring birds and indigenous plants and animals of Texas and the Gulf Coast region have been exhibited nationwide. His work is included in the permanent collections of the Houston Museum of Art, The Menil Collection, The Fort Worth Modern, The Dallas Museum of Art and numerous other public and private collections. He currently has a 30-year survey exhibition on view at the Mabee-Gerrer Museum of Art in Shawnee, Oklahoma through February 6.

The Art Talks are free, but reservations are required. Please RSVP for either the January 15 or February 5 event at 817.860.6752. We look forward to sharing these beautiful paintings with you.

Written by Administrator Friday, 05 November 2010 14:27

The Devil's Cigar is starting to sprout up near dead cedar elm stumps in River Legacy Parks. It can usually be seen from fall to December. This unusual fungus releases a cloud of smoke-like spores when it opens, making a hissing sound. It can only be foud in parts of Texas and Japan.

Check out the photos on our Facebook page.

Who knew fungus could be so interesting!
