Summer Classes

Summer adventures at River Legacy Living Science Center provide students with an exciting hands-on, minds-on opportunity to explore the natural world.

  • A variety of weeklong programs in June and July offer children engaging ways to learn about wildlife, ecology and the environment.
  • Age-appropriate curriculums benefit preschool children through 8th grade.
  • All classes feature investigations both inside the Living Science Center and outdoors in the rich resources of River Legacy Parks.
  • Classes fill on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Children should come dressed for both indoor and outdoor explorations. Closed-toe shoes are strongly recommended.

Classes and Class Schedules - 2012

Preschool (Classes are $175 per session. Children must be 3, 4, or 5/entering kindergarten by the session date in which they are enrolled. Also, they must be fully toilet trained.)

3-year-olds

Winged Wonders – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  June 18-22 and June 25-29 (Sessions 1 & 2 AM Full)
What would you do if YOU had wings? Learn about some of River Legacy's wonderful winged creatures and the surprising things they can do with THEIR wings.

Scales & Tails – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  July 9-13 and July 16-20 (Sessions 3 & 4 AM Full)
Explore a scaly assortment of the Living Science Center’s cold-blooded creatures who have what it takes to be a reptile.

 

4-year-olds

Animal Sense-Abilities  – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  June 18-22 and June 25-June 29 (Sessions 1 & 2 AM Full)
How does an earthworm hear? Why do snails wave their eyes around on stalks? You know how we use our senses - now learn how animals' senses help them to survive in River Legacy Parks.
Hide & Seek – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  July 9-13 and July 16-20 (Session 4 AM Full)
Examine the remarkable escape and defense mechanisms of numerous River Legacy Parks animals as they assume the role of predator or prey.

5-year-olds/Entering kindergarten

Wet & Wild – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  June 18-22 and June 25-29 (Sessions 1 & 2 AM Full)
Join in a hands-on exploration of the astounding aquatic adaptations exhibited by the plants and animals dwelling within the watery environments of River Legacy Parks.
Mighty Morphs – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  July 9-13 and July 16-20 (Sessions 3 & 4 AM Full)
Explore the astonishing transformations of special River Legacy Parks’ animals as they undergo the wondrous process of metamorphosis.


1st8th Grades (1st-4th grade classes are $175 per session; 5th-8th grade classes are $200 per session)

Entering 1st  & 2nd Grades

Eggstraordinary Eggs – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  June 18-22, June 25-29 and July 23-27 (Sessions 1 & 2 AM Fulll; Session 1 PM Full)
Through careful observations and daily, hands-on investigations of eggs and egg-laying animals, students will learn how extremely exciting exploring eggs can be.
Slime Sleuths – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  July 9-13, July 16-20 and July 23-27 (Sessions 3 & 4 AM Full) 
Unravel the mysteries of slime while examining the tell-tale clues left by an assortment of River Legacy Parks' slime-covered inhabitants.

Entering 3rd & 4th grades

Hands-on Herpetology – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 pm - 4 pm  •  June 18-22 and June 25-29 (Session 1 AM Full)
Engage in an up-close investigation of turtles, snakes, lizards, frogs, toads and more. Students will have the opportunity to safely handle reptiles and amphibians, and will search for and identify native herps in the park.
PSI: Pond Scene Investigations(NEW) – 9 am - 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  July 9-13 and July 16-20 
From insects that walk on water to reptiles that breathe less than once an hour, students will investigate River Legacy Parks' aquatic residents.

Entering 5th & 6th Grades

Unearthing Paleontology (NEW) – 9 am to 12 pm or 1 - 4 pm  •  June 18-22 and June 25-29
Delve into the science of paleontology, explore how local landforms and life forms have changed over time, and meet with a paleontologist currently investigating a local site. (May include a field trip that will require students to be dropped off and picked up at alternate nearby location.)

Nature’s Nocturnal Wonders II -- 6 - 9 pm M,T,W; 6 pm Thurs - 8 am Fri.  •  July 9-13 and July 16-20
Look deeply into the mysteries of the dark to catch a glimpse of the rarely seen nocturnal inhabitants of River Legacy Parks. This evening class includes a Thursday night sleepover featuring a night hike and an observation of live owls. Students who enrolled in Nocturnal Wonders last summer are encouraged to attend again. Class concludes at 8 am Friday morning.

Entering 7th & 8th Grades

Amusement Park Science – 9 am to 2 pm  •  July 24-26 (Three-day class)
Explore the exciting world of amusement park rides and games, build a mini-roller coaster and examine velocity, gravity, centripetal force, potential & kinetic energy. The class will conclude with a visit to Six Flags Over Texas for a day of observations, calculations and riding!
