Prior to the Cardboard Boat Regatta, River Legacy offers a FREE Boat Building School where contestants learn the tricks required to keep their boats afloat. Make plans to attend Boat Building School or contact the Living Science Center to check out the Boat Building School video.

DVDs of Boat Building School can also be checked out with a $20 refundable deposit at Living Science Center, 703 NW Green Oaks Blvd. You can also catch replays of Boat Building School on Arlington Cable Channel 16 at 8 am on Saturday mornings.

Boat kits can be purchased for only $125 and include 5 sheets of 5' x 8' cardboard, outline, assembly instructions and starter supplies. Contact the Foundation office for more info at 817.860.6752.

Boat Building Basics

Developing a Concept
| Be creative, and develop a theme
| Determine division/class/category you want to enter
| Sketch your creative ideas on paper
| Calculate length, width, height, draft, balance
| Consider size and weight of crew
| Build a scale model

Preparing for Construction
| Secure adequate work and storage space
| Gather supplies

Suggested Supplies
| Corrugated cardboard — three layers for floor, two layers for walls
| Acrylic latex caulk
| String line or straight edge, right angle or squaring tool
| Carpet knife or Exacto knife, extra blades
| Wood glue, Liquid Nail panel adhesive or DAP contact cement
| Water sealer, polyurethane
| Foam brush
| Paint brush or roller; paints, including latex house paint
| Paper tape, masking tape
| Creasing tool (scissors work well)
| Clamps (spring and quick)
| Measuring tape
